Danone México launched the third phase of the Margarita Project, an initiative that emerged in 2010 to shorten the distance between the small farmer who wants to sell his milk at good prices and the large company that demands large quantities of dairy product.
In this third stage of the Margarita project, the aim is to expand the impact of the program from 350 to 900 small producers by 2022, making Grupo Bimbo a partner in the effort to acquire the production of 400 thousand liters of milk per day that is expected to be achieved within three years.
Currently Danone acquires 155 thousand liters of milk per day from small producers.
José Mariano Salceda Servín de la Mora, vice France Mobile Number List president of New Business at Danone in Mexico, explained to ExpokNews that the presence of Bimbo will allow for great progress in this project.
For the third part of the project, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will contribute 1.3 million euros that will allow the acquisition of technology and granting credits to the producer as well as training.
This is in addition to the 900 thousand euros that Danone Ecosystéme will grant to this project, without forgetting that livestock farmers have access to various federal support, subsidies, advice and training on agricultural issues.
This series of actions has allowed small producers to increase their per capita income by 3.3 times what they earned at the beginning of Margarita.
Danone Ecosystéme is the financial resources fund that the company created a decade ago and that has contributed money to transform the value chains of the dairy sector in more than 80 projects in more than 30 countries, receiving contributions of more than 100 million euros with 4.4 million beneficiaries in 10 years.
He said that the production of small producer milk in 2010 was equivalent to 12% of the total milk that Danone acquired, but when productivity exploded thanks to Margarita it went to a percentage of 18% with a view to reaching 22% of the total milk acquired by this company in 2022.
"Danone does not import milk, all input is national, making it essential to supply quality milk and in accordance with our policy that there can be no business without the well-being of small livestock producers," he mentioned.
Margarita's pilot project focused on 300 dairy producers in Jalisco and Guanajuato with a training program led by the UNAM Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science.
The Margarita Project has been a success, going from working with 30 small producers to 350 currently and having consolidated financial support in credits to the producer, product purchase, technological support and training.
He highlighted the promotion of technology, such as the placement of magnetic collars for cows on a pilot farm in Los Altos de Jalisco, to have indications about the behavior of the cows, their living conditions, productivity, diseases, reproduction and well-being.
